Stolen bikes=NoCal upgrade

Posted in News of the Week, Road Gear with tags on February 19, 2009 by VH1

According to Velonews the missing bikes from Astana have been recoveredWhat Velonews did not report is that other teams were robbed and that each bike received a NoCal “upgrade”  from a local cycling club.  Here is how the recovered bikes look now:

Rock Racing

rockracingOuch-Got a bike and support car upgrade.

ouchBianchi doesn’t have a team in the Tour of California, but they got an upgrade anyway

bianchiThe bikes from Astana and Lance’s custom TT bike were not overhauled due to the unknown, NASA developed carbon blend they were fabricated from.  Instead, each bike received a 24 carat gold spare wheel.

Why?

Posted in Backcountry with tags , , on February 17, 2009 by VH1

Why can I jump out of bed at 4:30am to ski, but have a rough time waking up at 7:30 any other day?

Why is it fun to suffer?

Why can I curse the elements in one breath, then glorify them mere seconds later?

Why do I push my physical/mental limits for recreational purposes?

Why does a backcountry outing stick in my mind for months?

Why do we climb a mountain to ski down, when 1/2 mile away people are riding chairs to the top of 2 world class resorts?

Why?

This is why:

Desert Rampage-Are you ready to RUMBLE

Posted in Mtn. Bike with tags on February 7, 2009 by VH1

The first ICUP event of the year is the Desert Rampage in St. George hosted by Red Rock Bicycle Co.  Last year, I thought after a winter of structured trainer sessions that I would be ready.  I quickly found out that riding  a trainer and racing bikes are completely different and blew up all over the red rock.  This year I have mixed things up and hopefully in a month from today I will have a better showing!

I am in, I am in, I am in!  Look what came in the mail today. dsc_0127I am calling my shot right now by saying I will beat Chris Carmichael this year on a SS.  Chris beat me by a minute last year and I am out for revenge!

The Asians-Balls of Fury

Posted in News of the Week with tags on February 5, 2009 by VH1

Today I took a break from an anatomy session and found a room labeled ping pong.  I was with a guy from Sweden named Fredrick.  We walked in, started playing, and I swiftly gave him a beatdown!  Having lived in Korea for a couple years I was feeling the skill returning (I was also champion of the Carnival Cruise ship back in 1996).  Then it all changed.  Liu and Xiang walked in with a swagger I have never seen before.  The 2 Asians armed with their own paddles walked in and asked the Swede and I if we wanted to play doubles.  We knew we were in trouble but agreed to play doubles if we each took an Asian as teammate.  Fredrick was first to return Xiang’s serve and didn’t touch 1 of the first 5 serves.  I then served to Liu, and SHE put 4 of 5 slams down on the table.  I served 1 into the net or she would have slammed that too. the score is now 5-5.  Needless to say this pattern repeated until the score was knotted at 20-20! Luckily it was Fredrick’s turn to serve for the match.  Xiang-Clark 22, Liu-Swede 20.  The Swede and I quickly exited the room and vowed never to return!

Spinneapolis

Posted in Training with tags on February 3, 2009 by VH1

Recently I was able to squeeze in a spin class in Minneapolis while away on business.  This is what I learned:

1. Anyone can teach spin class.  The instructor of this class was a very short and powerful woman.  I don’t think she has ever set a left cheek on a real bike saddle.

2. The spin groupies shout Indian-like war cries while trying to hit their “AT”.

3. Every guy in Minneapolis has a beard.  I thought the media was just stereotyping Minnesotans, but this truly is the truth.

4. Guys from Minneapolis love to wear sweat bands.  I felt like a true outsider.  I had no head/wrist bands and was clean shaven

5. Due to the cold temps, all cyclists ride in time trial positioning.  Either this is true or everyone here is a tri-geek

6. People EVERYWHERE show up to spin class in full kits and bring gel packs for the breaks between zone 2-3.  My highlight was the dude in the Taco Bell kit, with a beard, bald head and you guessed it head and wrist bands!

7. Techno music is the voice of the Sirens for the people located in the great North.  I guess the Scandinavian like weather helps these fine folks associate with this Divine genre of music.  Nothing says cool down like uptempo synthesizer!

8. Flannel is the cloth of choice for spinning.  Just kidding this isn’t true

9. The cycling community is VERY tight knit. I was welcomed with open arms and even invited out to their first “indoor” tri of the year.
